Isn't It Time You Stopped Trying to Control Your Eating and Weight?
Instead Start Taking Back Control of Your Life, Today!Do you have concerns about your eating habits or weight? Do you find yourself worrying about your appearance? Perhaps you know someone who is demonstrating these behaviors
If so, it's important for you to know that eating disorders are preventable and treatable!
Many women in our society find themselves somewhere along the continuum of poor body image and disordered eating.
The media has convinced many of us that we can be happy, if only we're thin or have a certain physique.
Form ObjectWhile there are only a handful of supermodels in the world, it often seems there are 3 billion women that want to look just like them. But healthy bodies come in all shapes and sizes, as do unhappy people!
Please allow me to introduce myself. My name is Barbara Tener, and I've been providing effective treatments for women suffering from eating disorders and negative body-image issues for well over 20 years.
The focus of my private psychotherapy practice in Atherton, California, is helping women and girls who are suffering from bulimia, anorexia, and binge eating disorders, as well as those who are unhappy with their bodies and spend much of their day obsessing about their weight, what they ate or plan to eat, and how much they need to exercise.
I've treated numerous "celebrities" with eating disorder and body-image issues. And, no matter how successful or famous any of them were, the adoration from others could never insulate them from the emotional pain they had inside. The celebrities I've worked with were just as troubled as my other clients, even though, to everyone else, they had the perfect body and a glamorous, happy life. The Importance of Recognizing You Need Help
Unfortunately, eating disorder behaviors can be difficult to recognize for what they are. And, all too often, people don't seek professional help until the behaviors become well out of control.
Eating disorders commonly begin with an excessive concern about one's appearance and negatively comparing oneself to others. Feelings of depression and anxiety usually accompany these symptoms and are often precursors to them. Yet eating disorder behaviors are often used by people in an attempt to reduce the very anxiety, depression, boredom, and loneliness that played a part in developing them in the first place.
But there is reason to be hopeful Research has shown time and time again that the sooner people who are concerned about their body image receive treatment the faster the healing process and the better the outcome.Successfully Overcoming Eating Disorders and Negative Body-Image Issues
According to the National Eating Disorders Association, the most effective eating disorder treatments involve some form of psychotherapy. Therapy can help you uncover and address the underlying issues that trigger negative self-image and eating disorder behaviors.
However, therapy must go hand-in-hand with careful attention to your specific medical and nutritional needs. For this reason, I work with a team of professionals that can help you determine a healthy weight, monitor your health, and help you learn about your body, your nutrition options, and discover what physical activities you enjoy.
Every treatment plan I create is individually tailored to each client and your treatment will depend on the severity of the problem you're facing and your individual strengths and needs.
In a supportive, compassionate, and confidential setting we can work together to determine if you really need help, uncover and resolve the issues that keep you focusing on your body image or eating issues, and create a treatment plan that makes the most sense for you.
I consider it vitally important that the mothers and daughters of our society learn to accept their bodies, understand their weight and eating issues, and create healthy lifestyles that meet their needs and not the needs of others around them.
Your body is not an "enemy" that needs to be controlled. You can develop a positive self-image and learn to eat anything you want just not everything you want.
And, by learning to spend less time obsessing about food and weight, you'll find more energy to focus on all the aspects of life there are to enjoy and truly be thankful for!
Life can replace the obsession! As one of my clients recently commented, "I got my life back! Now that I'm not constantly thinking about food, I remember how creative I am and how much fun life can be!"For more information about eating disorders and the prevention and treatment services I offer, I encourage you to review this website by using the links at the top and bottom of this page or call me at 650-854-4631 with any questions you have or to schedule a free, initial consultation.
