Barbara Tener, Ph.D., MFT
Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist
License # PSY 12176, MFC 18631
My name is Barbara Tener, and I am a licensed clinical psychologist with a private psychotherapy practice in Atherton, California, which I've owned and operated for the last two decades.
The focus of my practice is helping anorexics, bulimics, binge eaters, and those who are unhappy with their bodies and spend much of their day obsessing about their weight, what they ate or plan to eat, and how they must exercise.
It is important for women to know there is a life beyond one's self-image and, when discovered and nurtured, you can replace your obsession with food and weight with a life of contentment and joy!
My path to becoming a therapist took some time and saw some lengthy tangents. Along the way I've been a teacher, counselor, wife, mother, and grandmother all experiences that have shaped my outlook on life and my current work.
Before opening my private practice, I had a degree in mathematics and worked in both middle and elementary schools as a teacher and counselor. During my formal training as a therapist, I counseled diverse populations in a variety of settings, counseled individuals, couples, and families, and facilitated groups of children and adults.
My dissertation was based on a treatment program for people suffering from bulimia, and I began working with people with eating disorders in the early 1980s when the problem scarcely had a name and certainly wasn't a common topic of discussion. The disorders weren't new, but the diagnosis definitely was.
Each client who comes into my office can expect to be treated with compassion, understanding, and respect. From your first contact with me, I will be determined to help you find the services you need and the help you seek.
I personally return all phone calls and e-mails in a timely fashion. I offer a free phone consultation in order to answer questions and give you the opportunity to make a considered decision about choosing me as your therapist. In the event you find we aren't a good fit, I provide referrals to colleagues who may better suit your needs.
I am connected to my community of fellow therapists through a consultation network that I access on a regular basis. I am also a member of several professional organizations, and I routinely acquire more units of continuing education than that required by the state licensing board.
My goal as a therapist is to create a relationship with clients based on mutual honesty, respect, knowledge, and compassion.
I don't "fix" anyone. My job is to facilitate my clients' healing with the understanding that they can solve their own problems and discover their own life purpose.
I will strive to ensure you feel supported, heard, and understood, learn effective coping skills, and begin letting go of behaviors that aren't serving you so you can move forward in life with confidence that you are on the right path for you!Education
